Privacy Policy
How boat.vin collects, uses and protects personal data.
Last updated Nov 2, 2026
1. Who we are
boat.vin is operated by Fleetiqo LLC (“Fleetiqo”, “we”, “us”), which also operates SalvageAlert. Fleetiqo is the data controller for boat.vin.
boat.vin has no accounts of its own: signing in uses your SalvageAlert account. Everything tied to that account (your email, name, password, saved boats, alerts, HIN watches, support messages and plan) is stored by SalvageAlert and covered by the SalvageAlert Privacy Policy as well as this one.
2. What we collect
- Account data when you sign in or register: email, optional name, and a password checked by SalvageAlert, or the identity Google or Apple confirms when you use them.
- What you do with your account here: boats you save, boat alerts and HIN watches you create, reminder settings, and messages you send to support.
- Technical data: IP address, browser and device information, and the pages requested, in our server logs, used for security, rate limiting and to find faults. If a page fails in your browser, the error and the page address are sent to us.
- Location, only if you ask for it: “Boats near me” asks your browser for your position, rounds it and puts it in the page address to sort by distance. It is not stored with your account.
3. How we use it
To run boat.vin and your account, show you the boats and alerts you asked for, answer support requests, keep the service secure and working, and meet legal obligations. We do not sell personal data and we do not use it for advertising.
4. Legal bases
Depending on where you live: performance of our contract with you (your account and its features), our legitimate interests (security, fixing faults, improving the service), legal obligations, and consent where the law requires it.
5. Signing in with SalvageAlert
If you are signed in on salvagealert.com, boat.vin signs you in automatically: your browser makes one short trip through salvagealert.com, which hands boat.vin a one-time code (valid for a minute, usable once) instead of a password. If you are not signed in there, nothing is shared and boat.vin remembers for a week that it checked.
6. Who else receives data
- SalvageAlert (same company): your account and everything listed in section 2 that belongs to it.
- Google and Apple, only if you choose to sign in with them.
- Google Analytics (Google LLC), which measures visits: the pages opened, basic device information and your IP address, which Google does not store. Advertising features are off. In the EEA, the UK, Switzerland and Québec no cookie is set.
- OpenStreetMap, which serves the map tiles on the map page and so receives your IP address when you open it.
- Copart and IAA, whose servers deliver some lot photos, and to whose sites the auction links lead.
- Hosting, network and email providers (including Cloudflare), strictly to operate the service.
We may disclose data where required by law or to protect rights and security.
7. How long we keep it
Account data is kept while your account exists and handled as the SalvageAlert Privacy Policy describes when you delete it (locked at once, erased after 30 days). Server logs are kept for a short period for security and then deleted. Cookies last as described in our Cookie Policy.
8. Your rights
Depending on the law that applies to you, you can ask to access, correct, delete or export your data, or object to or restrict its use. Write to [email protected]. You can download your account data and delete your account from your SalvageAlert settings. In the EEA, the UK or Switzerland you may also complain to your data-protection authority.
9. Transfers, security and children
Your data may be processed outside your country, with reasonable contractual and technical safeguards where required. We apply industry-standard security measures; no system is risk-free. boat.vin is not intended for anyone under 18.
10. Changes and contact
We may update this policy and will change the date above when we do; material changes are announced on the site or by email. Questions: [email protected] or [email protected].
